We are a co-design digital inclusion and innovation team hosted by the NHS. Our mission is to ensure that everyone benefits from digitally-enabled health and care.

We are delighted to announce our new ambitious flagship social change programme; Inclusive Digital Transformation.

Millions of people are digitally and socially excluded in the UK. Evidence suggests these people are more likely to need health and care services. This is the flaw in the multi-billion pound digital transformation plan.

There is good news though. The Phase 3 NHS response to Covid19 letter sent from NHS England/Improvement to all NHS Leaders on 31 July 2020 specifically highlights the need to ensure that digitally enabled care pathways increase inclusion and there has been an increasing interest in tackling the triple whammy challenge of health inequalities, digital exclusion and Covid-19.

We know this is a difficult and complex issue which cannot be solved with one magic silver bullet. There are inter-related factors such as life context, digital skills and confidence, access to devices and data and system related issues such as accessibility of digitally enabled tools and services, and the capability of staff to use and promote digital.

We have been working with a range of partners to begin a social change programme we are calling Inclusive Digital Transformation. We are at the beginning of the journey and whilst we have a clear goal of everyone benefiting from digital enabled health and care, we cannot foresee all the twists and turns along the way. Ultimately Inclusive Digital Transformation means the NHS, local government, voluntary sector, industry, academia and citizens and communities purposefully working together to co-design digitally enabled health and care that works for everyone.

mHabitat is working across the health and care system with many different partners including people who are more digitally excluded to shine a spotlight on good practice, understand needs and priorities and co-design enhancements which help to build equity and inclusion into digitally enabled services, pathways and strategies. Partners include: NHSX, NHSE, AHSN’s, ICS’s/STP’s, Voluntary Sector, Industry, Academia and Local Government.

Here's the latest developments in our Inclusive Digital Transformation Social Change Programme:

New Deputy Director of Delivery and Design
We are delighted to announce that Pete Nuckley has joined us as our new Deputy Director of Delivery and Design. Pete is one of the most experienced digital inclusion service designers in the country having just completed the NHS Widening Digital Participation programme.  The programme used co-design to find points in health and care systems which could be improved with digital and community interventions. mHabitat delivered one of these projects facilitating the co-design of increased accessibility to health and care services for people living with hearing or sight loss.

Some of the key projects in our Inclusive Digital Transformation programme are:

Mapping the Current Picture
mHabitat is working with NHSX to find out more about the current picture of 'Inclusive Digital Transformation' in a health and care context at an Integrated Care System (ICS)/Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) level and at a local level across the country.

North East and Yorkshire and Humber Remote Consultation Joined Up Care Programme
We will be working with the Academic Health Science Networks in the two regions to build capacity and understanding of Inclusive Digital Transformation through practical co-design processes, networks and learning programmes. #WatchThisSpace for more details.

We are working with a number of ICS's and STP's to support them to integrate Inclusive Digital Transformation into their strategies and practices including understanding the current picture of barriers, drivers and priorities, shining a spotlight on existing good practice and working with more excluded groups to codesigning equity enhancements into digitally enabled services.

We believe in open source and in the power of the collective and will share learning and the assets we produce. Join us and join in on twitter @wearemhabitat #InclusiveDigiHealth
