MindWell is an accessible website which provides information about mental health in the Leeds area. Launched on 10 October 2016 to coincide with World Mental Health Day, Mindwell is accessible to those with visual and auditory impairments as well as including downloadable resources and videos for users.

Prior to MindWell’s creation, there was a clear gap in the market for a free, comprehensive resource for mental health information and support in Leeds. This includes information on urgent crisis support, practical support (such as financial or housing issues), information about the different services available in Leeds, and more. It includes clear and accurate information about available resources, information about different conditions, and information for parents and carers. The Mindwell site has also been made as accessible as possible. Written in plain English, and including BSL and audio description, Mindwell is a resource that can be accessed by those who need it. The site also uses Browsealoud software, which translates the content into over 200 languages, making it a more accessible resource for non-English speakers. The recent addition of the bereavement section has also been a valuable resource for those experiencing loss and grief.

The process of creating MindWell was a city-wide creation. The project was spearheaded by content manager Nicola Gallear (from Forum Central), and built by digital agency Yoomee. It was also NHS funded, and the development facilitated by Alicia Ridout from mHabitat. The project was co-designed with members of the public, service users, carers and those working in mental health services. Those working in adult social care, in the third sector, in libraries, and in businesses were also involved in the co-creation process.

The public were involved through open workshops at each stage of the development. All workshops were hosted by Yoomee. In the workshops the groups created a map to plan site content, discussed branding, and produced personas to represent the potential users of Mindwell. Importantly, the tone of voice of the site was developed. Extensive user testing was included in the process, as well as surveys, meetings with relevant groups across the city, and speaking at relevant events about Mindwell.

Fundamentally, MindWell can be accessed by those who need it, whether they have a long-term mental health condition or not.

MindWell has also been recognised for its contribution with a growing number of awards, including the Plain English Award 2017, and the Patient Engagement Award at the Medilink Yorkshire and Humber Healthcare Business Awards 2017. You can find out more about the awards MindWell has won here.

MindWell has also received coverage in the Yorkshire Evening Post, and now boasts an average of 5500 sessions/searches per month.
